Chicago Art Girls Blog

Why write a blog when others will do it for/about you?

As you may or may not know, I am a card-carrying member of the Chicago Art Girls.

"Space" Feature in the Chicago Reader

Who stinks at blogging?  I stink at blogging.  Yeesh, please forgive while I try to reset my brain from making to writing.  In the meantime, check out this feature that the Chicago Reader did on me and my home!

Free Halloween Kitty pin with purchase!

I love Halloween, but sadly I no longer have time to decorate the yard with foam core tombs and scary skeletons.  I do have a handful of vintage decorations for the inside - skulls, cats and witches - and I have a good amount of Dia de los Muertos calaveras out all the time and I love them.  I thought it would be fun to make some vintage-inspired Halloween kitty pins and, since I don't normally make/sell pins, give them away for free!  All you have to do is be one of the first twenty folks to spend $35+ at in October and I'll include it in your package.

You and Me This Morning interview

This February, I had the good fortune to be interviewed in my studio for WCIU's "You and Me This Morning".  It was a blast (if a little nerve wracking)!

If you, like me, weren't up before 7am on this 16 degree day, you can watch it here:

Calm before the storm

And I don't mean to be ironic by writing that the day that Sandy is hitting the East Coast (stay safe, folks!)

Playing in the studio

I've been making the same thing for years with only small design tweaks (printing on multiple layers of glass, composition) and some pretty big design leaps (from only pictures of found objects to my own drawings and artwork).  My work is very rigid - straight lines, square coasters, rectangular platters, even most of my buckles and jewelry are very rectilinear.  What can I say?  I like the predictability of it.  Also, I hate cutting circles - both the act of it and the wasted corner pieces of glass that get tossed into the recycle bin.

DIY Trunk Show - here I come!

I'm very excited to be returning to my roots and selling at Chicago's very own DIY Trunk Show this November.  It's their 10th year (I started selling with them in their 2nd year), and my 7th time, 1st in their new location.  This show is CHOCK full of crafty goodness and artisan handmades and I can't wait to be a part of it.

Kiku-co Relaunch!

It's hard for a DIY girl like myself to hand the reigns over for anything.  Aside from designing, printing and fusing my work, I also keep the books, do the taxes, order the supplies, handle the graphic design, track inventory, fix the machines, load the truck, make the displays and, yes, design the website.  I am so happy to say that after 8 years those days are behind me.  I've put away DreamWeaver (thank dog), said goodbye to ZenCart and HIRED someone to create my new site in Drupal.
